What is periodontics?

Periodontics is a field of dentistry that focuses on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of severe gum disease, oral inflammation, and periodontal disease.

How do I get periodontal disease?

Your mouth is full of bacteria that form a sticky, colorless “plaque” on your teeth. You need to brush and floss regularly to remove plaque. If you don't, it hardens and forms “tartar” that only a professional cleaning removes. The longer plaque and tartar stay on your teeth, the more harmful it becomes.

These substances can inflame your gums, causing them to bleed easily and appear red and swollen (that's known as gingivitis). Fortunately, gingivitis is a mild, reversible form of gum disease that doesn't lead to bone or tissue loss.

However, leaving gingivitis untreated leads to periodontitis, an inflammation around the tooth that causes your gums to pull away from your teeth.

Spaces then form and become infected. While your body fights the bacteria, toxins and your immune system’s natural response to infection start to weaken the bone and connective tissue that hold your teeth in place. Eventually, your teeth loosen and fall out.

When should I schedule a periodontal visit?

If you have periodontal disease or are at risk for it, you need to see a dentist with periodontal training. However, at Granada Hills Dental Group, Dr. Rafie and Dr. Khoshbin believe in prevention. They offer a comprehensive periodontal evaluation as part of your annual exam. They do so to gauge your periodontal health, diagnose any existing diseases, assess your risk for diseases, and determine whether any treatment is needed.

What happens during a periodontal appointment?

During your first visit, one of the dentists at Granada Hills Dental Group reviews your medical and dental histories. That includes any medications you take and any other treatments you're undergoing that might affect periodontal care, including those for heart disease, diabetes, and pregnancy.

Either Dr. Rafie or Dr. Khoshbin examine your gums, check to see if there's any gum line recession, assess how your teeth fit together when biting, and check to see if any of your teeth appear loose.

They also take a small measuring instrument, called a probe, to determine the depth of any existing periodontal pockets. That helps them assess the health of your gums. X-rays, meanwhile, help them observe the health of your bones below the gum line.
